Today we’re talking about a dreaded occurrence for most parents…the ear infection! 👂

So, what do parents need to know?
Ear infections in the middle ear (aka otitis media) are different from outer ear infections (aka swimmer`s ear).We are focusing on middle ear infections today.

Otitis media happens when bacteria or viruses infect the small space behind the eardrum. Children are more susceptible to getting these infections because:

🔹their immune systems are still developing
🔹their eustachian tube (which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat) is smaller and more horizontal, which typically leads to more fluid build up than in adult ears
🔹they usually encounter more germs than adults
